THE IDENTIFICATION OF JAZZ ON EARLY GRAMOPHONE RECORDS

One of the most important tasks in the research of Latvian jazz is the identification and analysis of early recordings. In order to perform this task, it is necessary, firstly, to define jazz – a specific musical phenomenon; secondly, to create criteria for the analysis of the recordings. Identifying jazz, particularly at its early stages, is one of the most difficult issues in jazz research and is still an important point for discussions and research.
In the article, the author reviews the most common jazz definitions, which define jazz as an amalgamation of elements drawn from European-American and tribal African music, characterised by several aspects, such as a specific attitude towards tone, which is called swing, spontaneity, sonority and a particular style of phrasing.
