Author Guidelines

  • The article submitted for consideration must be original and must not have been previously published or submitted for publication in any other scientific journal.
  • The languages of the journal are Latvian and English.
  • The length of a submission should be no more than 40 000 characters with spaces, including abstract, bibliography, and summary.
  • When submitting an article, the author affirms that the material to be published does not infringe upon the copyrights of any third pa If an article contains visual materials (from museums, archives, etc. collections, or images from books), audio, and video files, written confirmation must be provided to the Editorial Board, indicating the author's right to use these materials.
  • Information about the author – name and surname, titles, academic degree, represented institution, and country – should not appear in the article. This will be indicated in the metadata field when submitting the article to the journal system.

Article should include:

  1. The title – should be concise and reflect the topic accurately.
  2. Abstract – briefly state the main purpose of the article, the aims, research methods, sources, main results, and conclusions. No more than 1800 characters with spaces.
  3. Keywords – 3 to 5 that offer precise insight into the article's topic.
  4. Body text – introduction, main textual part (if required subtitled in bold), conclusions, footnotes (if required).
  5. Bibliography – full list of cited sources, subdivided into sections (unpublished and published sources) and arranged in alphabetical order.
  6. Appendices (if required) – should be numbered and referred to in the body text.
  7. Extended summary – in English if the article is in Latvian or in Latvian if the article is in English. The aim of an extended summary is to give a more in-depth overview of the article so that it is accessible both internationally and locally. The name of the translator must be indicated. A summary should be no more than 5000 characters with spaces.

Formatting:

  • Articles should be submitted in Word format (.doc or .docx). The title of the article should be written in capital letters, highlighted in bold, size 14 pt. For the rest of the article should be used Times New Roman font, size 12 pt., 1,5 pt. line spacing, 0 pt. spacing before/after paragraphs – 0 pt., 0,5 cm indentation.
  • Special terms and foreign words should be in italics. Quoted text should be set in quotation marks and indented from the body text. The titles of the compositions should be written in italics, but if the title is genre-specific (Symphony, Concerto, etc.) it should be written as a regular text.
  • Appendices should be submitted as separate numbered files in the specified formats (.jpg, .png, .pdf for images; .xls or .xlsx for editable charts; .doc or .docx for tables). If an author is not the creator of an appendix, indicate the source or the creator of the appendix.

References

The referencing style should follow the guidelines of The Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition author-date system (see Chicago-Style Citation Quick Guide). Citations are carried within the text. A full bibliography should be included at the end of the article, divided into sections (unpublished and published sources), and arranged in an alphabetical list.

Previous volumes of Mūzikas akadēmijas raksti differed from the example given in the Chicago Manual in several ways: they used a colon instead of a comma in the in-text citation; when referring to the year in the bibliography, they used brackets instead of period marks; omitted quotation marks in the bibliography list due to the specific linguistic conventions of the Latvian language.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The file is in Microsoft Word format.
  • The file does not contain author’s name, academic degree and affiliation; these data are inserted in metadata field in the system.
  • The article is original text, is not previously published or submitted for publishing to another journal at the same time as to Mūzikas akadēmijas raksti.
  • The text is formatted according to Formatting Guidelines and Author Guidelines.
